KATAMEYA RESIDENTIAL AREA
New Cairo, Egypt
General Organization for Physical Planning (GOPP), responsible for all planning activities in Egypt, retained Sites International to undertake a schematic master planning exercise for a new mixed use residential community with a commercial center, entertainments options and ample open green spaces. The project, part of Cairo’s governorate framework of an integrated development for the general area, is located Southeast of Cairo on the Mokattam sandy hills.
The master plan outlined urban design alternatives, prepared analysis of real estate potentials, and detailed architectural plan that offers multiple housing options for the project’s challenging terrain of varying and significant inclinations. These challenges were most pronounced at the perimeter, with considerable steep edges, and in access to and from the location. The plan visually capitalized on these land variations, in its architectural design for housing and commercial services, in the distribution of green open spaces within and around the community, and in the design of vehicular networks to enhance accessibility and to jointly create an identifiable self-sufficient place with a unique life style.
