Al-Murooj Project
King Abdullah Economic City, Saudi Arabia
Al-Murooj project lies within King Adbullah Economic City that is located on Red Sea coast 100 km north from the commercial hub, Jeddah.
Al Murooj, built on about 1300 acres, is a high-end residential development with fifteen different communities, a town center and a sport complex. Sites International was consulted to develop the landscape design, from concept to construction documents, for the sole Sport Complex of the development intended to promote healthy living alongside serving as a recreation facility.
Sites International developed context-specific solutions that seamlessly integrate the architecture of building facilities and outdoor fields into the surrounding complex buildings and community at large. The center offers a variety of activities, with several indoor options, including swimming pools, basket ball and tennis courts, running tracks, gymnasium, and soccer fields with a number of them including bleachers. Different landscape expressions and vocabularies are used to distinguish family, children, women, and men areas. In family oriented areas around leisure pools or social interaction points, low height berm and hedges are utilized. Zen area, for women’s use, applies a particular vocabulary and combination of plants, trees and shrubs. The facility’s parking area presented a challenge, positioned on a curve setting, on how to preserve the modular size for each car space with its tent like shading structure. Key elements in the landscape design are the rich use of water features, lush greenery, and heavy shade throughout the outdoor areas with its array of cafés, lounges, and sitting areas all harmoniously integrated within a landscape design committed to environmental preservation.
